Five Sentence Reviews

With the start of summer comes the release of what Hollywood hopes will be this years box office blockbusters. Some of the biggest releases scheduled for 2014 come out this summer.

So far I have seen 4 of them. I would like to relay my opinions but I'm no movie critic and will not pretend to be. So I've come up with a way to let you know what I think. They are called "5 Sentence Reviews."

I will do my best to express my opinion but there may be some spoilers. So if you haven't seen any of these movies please skip my reviews. Here I go. I'm going in reverse order of preference.

The Amazing Spider Man 2
Andrew Garfield is totally miscast. I didn't like any of the characters enough to be concerned about what happened to them. The plot is too clumsy and the dialogue is awkward. Emma Stone is beautiful and outshines limits put on her by her character. However late in the film my favorite Marvel villain shows up played by one of my favorite actors.

Godzilla
I really wanted to see something new and different with this new generation of "monster movie" but didn't get it. Contrary to what is indicated by the trailer Bryan Cranston's part is very small. The monsters are extremely unimaginative and plot is very cliche. I did like the subplot that pays tribute to the US military soldier. Good "popcorn" movie but leaves you unsatisfied and hoping they do better with the already announced sequels.

Maleficent
There is no doubt that Angelina Jolie is the star of this film. The story is retold with lots of action, amazing visual effects,  and characters who are very compelling. The 2nd act gets a little too much like the ABC show "Once Upon A Time" for my taste, but it rebounds very well. The 3 fairies who watch over the princess are ridiculous; like the three stooges in drag. The flying scenes at the beginning of the picture and the dragon make the 3D upcharge worth it.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Not only does Captain America fight against an enemy he didn't know existed but he also forced into a place he never thought he'd be. In a world turned upside down Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury keeps helps keep Captain Rogers on target in his mission to save the world from a previously hidden evil. Black Widow and the newly introduced Falcon are just the support Captain America needs. Hang on tight; this one is a game changer for the entire Marvel Universe. By far the best Marvel movie since "The Avengers".

There you have my first batch of 5 Sentence Reviews. If or when you see these films let me know what you think.

It's promises to be a summer full of some pretty good moves. Over all, so far, it's off to a good start.
